Gerard Cairns is a board licensed optometrist.

Dr. Cairns was born in Glasgow, Scotland and he graduated with a Bachelor of Science with Honours in Optometry from Glasgow Caledonian University in 1995. He practiced for three years in Scotland before emigrating to New Zealand where he became the Principal Optometrist of the Eye Clinic at Auckland Hospital with a dual role as Fellow in Ophthalmology at the University of Auckland.

He specialized in advanced contact lens fitting and concurrently completed a PhD in Ophthalmology relating to corneal topography and visual optics in 2005.

Later that year, Dr. Cairns relocated to Rochester, New York to work as Manager of Global Clinical & Medical Affairs for Bausch and Lomb, where he worked at the cutting edge of contact lens research and development.

Dr. Cairns married a Rochester native and their decision to stay in Rochester prompted him to seek a license to practice optometry in NYS. In May 2016, Dr. Cairns graduated top of the class in the Advanced Standing International Program at the New England College of Optometry in Boston, where he also became friends with and shared clinical rotations with Dr Delee.

Dr. Cairns now supports ROG in the management of a multitude of eye conditions including glaucoma, cataracts, acute eye conditions, dry eye, diabetic eye disease, etc. Additionally, he has maintained his interest in specialty contact lenses including astigmatism, multifocal, RGP and scleral lenses and he is a certified Orthokeratology provider. Dr Cairns incorporates the latest FDA approved advancements and technologies into his practice to control the progression of myopia i.e. to actively stop vision becoming worse.

Dr. Cairns is a keen, self-taught, classical guitarist and spends much of his time exploring the recreational attractions around Rochester with his wife and daughter.
