Dr. Sarah Tiggelaar MD
Dr. Sarah M. Tiggelaar is a family medicine physician based in Victor, New York — the kind of primary care doctor whose work stretches across a whole life, from delivering babies and guiding new mothers to managing diabetes, blood pressure, and the complex needs of older patients living with dementia. Family medicine drew her precisely because it refuses to narrow down to a single organ or age group, and she has built her career around treating the whole person, and often the whole family.
She earned her medical degree from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, completed her residency in family medicine at Idaho State University, and went on to a fellowship in family medicine obstetrics at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Chattanooga. A board-certified family physician and a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians, she also carries an unusually research-minded background: her published work has examined cervical cancer prevention and HPV vaccine awareness in communities as different as rural Appalachia and China — a reflection of a long-standing interest in women’s health and in reaching patients the system tends to overlook.
That focus on maternal and family health has shaped her clinical life. At the University of Rochester she has directed the Maternal Child Health Fellowship, helping train the next generation of family doctors to care for mothers and babies through pregnancy and beyond. Her day-to-day practice runs the full spectrum of family medicine — prenatal and maternity care, contraception and family planning, preventive checkups and vaccines, and the ongoing management of chronic conditions.
Patients tend to single out the same quality: she listens. They describe a doctor who explains her reasoning instead of talking over their heads, who asks how they feel about a treatment plan before settling on it, and who has been known to call in the evening just to follow up on something she did not want to leave unsaid. By most accounts, it is an unusually attentive kind of care.
