Dr. Robert H. Oliver MD
Dr. Robert H. Oliver is an ear, nose, and throat surgeon in Rochester, New York, with more than three decades in otolaryngology — and a path into medicine that did not start in a lab. Before he ever picked up a scalpel, Dr. Oliver was a professional trombonist, performing in both classical and commercial settings, and that early life as a musician shaped a lasting interest in the human voice and the patients who depend on it.
He earned a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry from Stony Brook University, completed his medical degree at the University of Rochester, and trained in otolaryngology, head and neck surgery at Yale, where his research focused on quality-of-life issues for patients living with head and neck cancer. That interest in the voice later led him to direct the Raymond Cole, M.D. Voice Center in Greenwich, Connecticut. Today he is a board-certified otolaryngologist and head and neck surgeon affiliated with Rochester General Hospital, and as a Fellow of the American Academy of Otolaryngic Allergy he personally directs the allergy side of his practice — a role many ENT offices hand off entirely.
Patients describe the same things again and again: a doctor who explains what is actually happening, puts a nervous first-timer at ease within minutes, and takes the time to get a complicated history right. His office is known for being unhurried and easy to deal with, and it cares for Spanish-speaking patients as well.
Outside the exam room, Dr. Oliver has never put the trombone down — he plays lead trombone with the Rochester Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra and the Dave Richey Trombone Choir, and travels with Intervol on its annual medical mission to Dangriga, Belize. He lives in Canandaigua with his wife and two children.
