Dr. James Burkhart — known to just about everyone as “Steve” — is an obstetrician-gynecologist based in Victor, New York, with more than four decades of experience caring for women through pregnancy, childbirth, and every stage of gynecologic health. He is the kind of long-serving OB-GYN whose patients stay with him for decades, and many have.
Born in Iowa and raised just outside Rochester in Hilton, New York, he studied at Alma College in Michigan before earning his medical degree and a master of surgery from McGill University in Montreal. He completed his obstetrics and gynecology residency at the University of Rochester and stayed in the area to build his career — co-founding Genesee Valley Ob-Gyn in 1989, a practice he has called home ever since. He has been board certified in obstetrics and gynecology since 1988 and is a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
Beyond his own practice, he has been a steady presence in the Rochester medical community. He served the Highland Hospital medical staff over several years — as treasurer, then vice president, and finally as president — and he has long been devoted to teaching, earning the University of Rochester’s Ob/Gyn Residents’ Teaching Award twice over the course of his career.
