Clear, central vision is something most of us take for granted — until it begins to fade. Macular degeneration is one of the most common eye conditions affecting adults over 50 and a leading cause of vision loss in older Americans. The condition gradually damages the macula — the small, central portion of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed sight. Whether you’re reading fine print, driving, or recognizing a loved one’s face, healthy central vision is essential. Early detection and expert care can make all the difference.
At Cornerstone Eye Associates, our board-certified ophthalmologists bring decades of combined experience diagnosing and treating macular degeneration. Serving patients throughout Rochester and Victor, NY, we use advanced diagnostic technology and the latest treatment options to help preserve your vision and slow disease progression. Our patients trust us for compassionate, evidence-based care backed by real expertise.

Types of Macular Degeneration
There are two forms of macular degeneration: wet and dry. Dry AMD is the most common and tends to progress slowly over time. Wet AMD develops when abnormal blood vessels grow beneath the retina, causing more rapid vision loss — but it can often be treated effectively when caught early. Regular eye exams are critical for early detection and preventing permanent vision damage.
What Are the Symptoms of Macular Degeneration?
-
A gradual loss of ability to see objects clearly
-
A gradual loss of color vision
-
Distorted or blurry vision
-
A dark or empty area appearing in the center of vision

How Valeda Works
Valeda uses photobiomodulation (PBM) — specific wavelengths of low-level light therapy — to stimulate energy production within the eye, improving cellular health. Clinical studies have shown this treatment may help improve visual function and slow disease progression for patients living with Dry AMD.
About the Valeda Treatment
The therapy is easy, comfortable, and performed in-office at our Gates location over a series of short sessions. No eye drops, drugs, or injections are involved, and there is no discomfort during or after treatment.
You will be seated comfortably in front of the Valeda device and guided through each step. Active treatment time is less than 5 minutes per eye, per session. You will receive 9 treatments over 3 to 5 weeks per series, typically repeated every 4 months. Your doctor will determine your personalized plan.
Treatment with Valeda can help you see more clearly now and in the future.
When drusen (protein deposits found in eyes with dry AMD) accumulates, it can lead to progressive vision loss. The Valeda system helps reduce inflammation and gives cells more energy to clear out drusen deposits and improve sight.
