June is Cataract Awareness Month
Cataracts are one of the leading causes of blindness in the United States, if left untreated. In addition, the longer cataracts are left untreated, the more difficult it can be to successfully remove the cataract and restore vision. During Cataract Awareness Month in June, the American Academy of Ophthalmology reminds the public that early detection and treatment of cataracts is critical to preserving sight.
A cataract is a cloudy area in the normally clear lens at the front of the eye. There is no pain associated with the condition but there are other symptoms, including:
- Blurred/hazy vision
- Spots in front of the eye(s)
- Sensitivity to glare
- A feeling of film over the eye(s)
- A temporary improvement in near vision
Risk factors for developing cataracts include:
- Being over 55 years ol
- Eye injury or diease
- Family history of cataracts
- Smoking
- Use of certain medications
