June is Cataract Awareness month. Cataract surgery is the most common procedure performed in the United States. An incredible 3.6 Million procedures performed in the United States alone per year and upwards of 20 million worldwide. Cataract Surgery is necessary when the lens in a person’s eye become clouded making it difficult to see, this often begins with night time glare. The first cataract surgery was performed by Dr. Jacques Daviel in 1748. In more recent years the ophthalmic community has come out with Laser-Assisted cataract surgery which can provide more precise cuts, it offers less inflammation and can help correct astigmatism! During Cataract Awareness Month in June, the American Academy of Ophthalmology reminds the public that early detection and treatment of cataracts is critical to preserving sight.
