Mitomycin C use in PRK
Here at Cornerstone Eye Associates in Rochester we believe that a well informed refractive surgery patient is happier postoperatively. During the free consultation we determine if patients are a good candidate for refractive surgery. We also counsel them as to what type of procedure would be appropriate for them. While the majority of our patients are good candidates for LASIK some patients are better served with PRK. This is especially true if they have moderate to high myopia with thinner corneas. If this is the case we use a medicine called Mitomycin C to help prevent haze from forming during the post-operative period. A recent study was conducted and concluded that; Mitomycin C 0.02% used prophylactically during PRK or PTK re treatment was effective in preventing significant recurrent haze from developing. In eyes with high myopia or prevoius RK or scarring, MMC was effective in preventing significant haze formation.[J Refract Surg. 2009;25:S93-S97]
