LASIK vs. PRK

At Cornerstone Eye Associates in Rochester NY patients who come to see us for the  free consultation to have LASIK are not always good candidates. Some patients are better served with PRK (photorefractive keratectomy) depending on their prescription, corneal thickness, corneal shape or physical conditions. Our philosophy is to not only help the patient meet their visual goals but to also provide safe alternative procedures if they do not meet the criteria for LASIK. We understand the disappointment when patients are found to not be good candidates for LASIK. We counsel them regarding their options and what best fits their lifestyle. Patients will usually ask us about the visual outcomes of  LASIK vs. PRK. We tell them that around the 3 month mark the vision for LASIK vs. PRK is comparable. Sometimes the PRK patients even have better visual acuity than the LASIK patients. A recent study published in the Journal of Refractive Surgery concluded; Photorefractive keratectomy with MMC(mitomycin C) appears to be more effective than LASIK in custom surgery for moderate myopia[J Refract Surg.2008;24:326-336]. We are happy to tell our patients YES you can meet your visual goals vision whether you have LASIK or PRK here at Cornerstone Eye Associates!
