LASIK vs. PRK
Tuesday, April 28th, 2009At Cornerstone Eye Associates in Rochester NY patients who come to see us for the free consultation to have LASIK are not always good candidates. Some patients are better served with PRK (photorefractive keratectomy) depending on their prescription, corneal thickness, corneal shape or physical conditions. Our philosophy is to not only help the patient meet their visual goals but to also provide safe alternative procedures if they do not meet the criteria for LASIK. We understand the disappointment when patients are found to not be good candidates for LASIK. We counsel them regarding their options and what best fits their lifestyle. Patients will usually ask us about the visual outcomes of LASIK vs. PRK. We tell them that around the 3 month mark the vision for LASIK vs. PRK is comparable. Sometimes the PRK patients even have better visual acuity than the LASIK patients. A recent study published in the Journal of Refractive Surgery concluded; Photorefractive keratectomy with MMC(mitomycin C) appears to be more effective than LASIK in custom surgery for moderate myopia[J Refract Surg.2008;24:326-336]. We are happy to tell our patients YES you can meet your visual goals vision whether you have LASIK or PRK here at Cornerstone Eye Associates!

Post operative discomfort after PRK
Thursday, March 26th, 2009Here at Cornerstone Eye Associates in Rochester NY we hear lots of questions from patients regarding their post operative care after LASIK or PRK. One of the biggest concerns is discomfort after their LASIK or PRK procedure. We let them know that yes you may feel some scratchy, burning, foreign body sensation but these symptoms are temporary. For LASIK patients the symptoms are usually resolved within a 24 hour period. For patients that have PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy) the symptoms can last a few days longer. With some common sense tips and the instillation of eye drops that we provide, most patients have little discomfort after their PRK procedure. The use of cold BSS (balanced salt solution) and a bandage contact lens directly after the procedure helps with the discomfort. In combination these therapies work well in keeping Cornerstone Eye Associates PRK patients comfortable and happy.

Mitomycin C use in PRK
Thursday, March 12th, 2009Here at Cornerstone Eye Associates in Rochester we believe that a well informed refractive surgery patient is happier postoperatively. During the free consultation we determine if patients are a good candidate for refractive surgery. We also counsel them as to what type of procedure would be appropriate for them. While the majority of our patients are good candidates for LASIK some patients are better served with PRK. This is especially true if they have moderate to high myopia with thinner corneas. If this is the case we use a medicine called Mitomycin C to help prevent haze from forming during the post-operative period. A recent study was conducted and concluded that; Mitomycin C 0.02% used prophylactically during PRK or PTK re treatment was effective in preventing significant recurrent haze from developing. In eyes with high myopia or prevoius RK or scarring, MMC was effective in preventing significant haze formation.[J Refract Surg. 2009;25:S93-S97]

We have the first and longest practicing fellowship trained Glaucoma specialist in town and now have a Retina specialist on staff. We even have Optical Studios at all three of our locations to help patients pick out the newest styles in eyeglasses. My favorite part of what we do here at Cornerstone Eye Associates is to help patients get rid of the nusiance of glasses and contact lenses. People who have Refractive Surgery procedures, such as LASIK or PRK tell me all the time what a life changing experience it is! The best part is when they come in for their one day post op visit and I show them what they could see before and after without glasses. At this point most patients get a little emotional, I have even had some of them cry because they had never been able to read the eye chart before without their glasses. Talk about rewarding!
