Monovision for Early Presbyopes

Tuesday, September 28th, 2010

Some contact lens wearers who are early presbyopes (age 40+) are often well-served with monovision as an alternative to being fitted with bifocal contacts. With mnovision, you wear a contact lens on one eye to correct your ditance vision and a contact lens on your other eye to correct your near vision. The lens for distance vision is usually worn on your dominant eye. The induced imbalance between the eyes is most times minimal and, after a small adjustment period, often well tolerated. When distance or near vision is unacceptable, bifocal options need to be explored. Your Guide to Sport Sunglass Lens Tints Part 2

Tuesday, September 28th, 2010

The best tint for sport sunglasses often depends on the environmental and lighting conditions you experience while participating in a particular sport. So, while this guide offers quick “tried-and-true” tint solutions recommended by many eyecare professionals, don’t be afraid to experiment with lens colors–sometimes the best tints for optimizing performance are a matter of personal preferenceDark amber, copper or brown tinted lenses block high amounts of blue light to heighten contrast and visual acuity. This can be useful to improve contrast on grass and against blue skies. Examples of sports in which these tints may help optimize performance include: baseball, cycling, fishing (especially in waters with grassy bottoms), golf, hunting, skiing, and/or water sports. Green tinted lenses heighten contrast (mildly) while preserving color balance. Examples of sports in which these tints may optimize performance include, baseball and/or golf. A gray tint reduces overall brightness while preserving 100 percent normal color recognition. Examples of sports in which these tints may help optimize performance include all outdoor sports in bright light conditions. Cornerstone Eye Associates Optical Studios have tint samples you can use to help you decide which color(s) are best for you. Try to evaluate the lenses in lighting conditions that match those you will experience most often during your sport. Moreover, if you participate in several sports or in a variety of lighting conditions, consider purchasing more than one pair of sport sunglasses, with different lens tints in each pair. Some sport sunglass frames have interchangeable lenses for a variety of lighting conditions. Basic Care of Your Contact Lenses Part 4

Tuesday, September 21st, 2010

As a continuation to the last blog, please also be aware that when it comes time for you to purchase some new lens care products, you may be tempted to buy a different brand because the cost is lower, but this is not always a wise idea in that what you may save money-wise may not be worth the risk of using a possibly inferior product and may result in infection. Although these products are safe and are FDA approved, they are not always the same as the brand name product. So, overall, it is better to stick with a name brand like the one your eye doctor recommends. Also, once again, if you have specific questions about your vision, eye care, contact lenses, or caring for contact lenses, it is always best to see your eye care professional. Your Guide to Sport Sunglass Lens Tints Part 1

Tuesday, September 21st, 2010

The best tint for sport sunglasses often depends on the environmental and lighting conditions you experience while participating in a particular sport. So, while this guide offers quick “tried-and-true” tint solutions recommended by many eyecare professionals, don’t be afraid to experiment with lens colors–sometimes the best tints for optimizing performance are a matter of personal preference. A yellow or orange tint tends to heighten contrast in overcast, hazy, low-light conditions outdoors or for indoor sports and filters blue light for sharper focus. Examples of sports in which these tints may help improve performance include: cycling, hunting, shooting, skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling, indoor basketball, handball racquetball, and/or tennis. An amber, rose or red tint heightens contrast in partly cloudy and sunny conditions, but also causes significant color imbalances. Examples of sports in which these tints may help optimize performance include: cycling, fishing (amber lenses for sandy lake or stream beds), hunting, shooting, skiing, snowboarding, and/or water sports. Cornerstone Eye Associates Optical Studios have tint samples you can use to help you decide which color(s) are best for you. Basic Care of Your Contact Lenses Part 3

Tuesday, September 14th, 2010

Always use a sterile case for your lenses and make sure to replace the case every 2 months or so. Rinse your storage case and leave it open to air dry after use each day. A dirty case is a major source of infection. Clean the storage case using a toothbrush and contact lens solution on a weekly basis. Fill the lens holder with the soaking and disinfecting solution to kill any germs that may cause infections to the eye. Of course, if you have specific questions about your vision, eye care, contact lenses, or caring for contact lenses, it is always best to see your eye care professional. Transitions Lenses for Kids

Tuesday, September 14th, 2010

Parents understand that they need to take precautions to protect their children’s skin from too much sun exposure but many parents may not be aware of the need to also protect their children’s eyes from the sun’s potentially harmful glare and UV rays. The basic truth is that children are at more risk of experiencing the eye-damaging effects of UV exposure than adults for a number of reasons. For example: children are generally outdoors more than adults and, on average, they can receive three times the annual UV exposure as an adult; also the lens of an eye of a child below age ten allows more than six times the amount of ultraviolet radiation to penetrate than an adult’s eye. These are important examples as to why taking care of children’s eyes is so important. Understanding the best ways to do that–as well as protecting them early–can preserve a child’s quality and health of sight for the present and the future. Transitions lenses are one of the most convenient ways to prvide automatic, everyday protection for children who wear prescription eyeglasses. Transitions lenses block 100% of UV radiation and reduce glare, which also serves to minimize eye strain and fatigue.
