Four Types of Glare: 4. Distracting Glare

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

Glare is defined as a visual condition in which the observer feels either discomfort and/or exhibits a lower performance in visual tests (e.g. visual acuity or contrast sensitivity). This is produced by a relatively bright source of light–called the glare source–within the visual field. A given bright light may or may not produce glare depending upon the location and intensity of the light source, the background luminance, the state of adaptation of the eye or the clarity of the media of the eye. Although the term “glare” is used many times in a general sense, there are actually four different types of glare. The fourth type of glare is Distracting Glare. Distracting Glare is primarily an annoyance created by light reflecting off the surface of a lens, or internally reflecting within a spectacle lens. This kind of glare may cause eye fatigue, annoyance and distraction. It is also experienced at night around headlights or street lights. An anti-reflective treatment is the solution for this problem.

Four Types of Glare: 3. Discomforting Glare

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

Glare is defined as a visual condition in which the observer feels either discomfort and/or exhibits a lower performance in visual tests (e.g. visual acuity or contrast sensitivity). This is produced by a relatively bright source of light–called the glare source–within the visual field. Although the term “glare” is used many times in a general sense, there are actually four different types of glare. The third type of glare is Discomforting Glare. Discomforting Glare occurs due to changing light conditions and can cause squinting, eye fatigue or may even make your eyes water. Photochromic lenses can eliminate this type of glare.

Soft Contact Lens(es) Difficult to Remove? Follow These Steps

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

Step 1 -Wash and dry hands thoroughly.

Step 2 - Close sink drain before removing lenses and place a towel down, to catch the lens if you should drop it.

Step 3 - Place a few drops of a wetting solution in the eye to loosen up the lens.

Step 4 - Look up and use the index finger to gently slide the contact lens in a downward direction. As soon as it is down, use the thumb and index finger to gently grasp the lens and pull it off the eye. Once removed, if the lens is folded, very gently rub the lens to unfold and restore it to its original shape.

Step 5 - Place lens in storage case and cover it with contact lens solution. Replace storage case lid with correct marking (right or left). Repeat process for second lens.

Four Types of Glare: 2. Disabling Glare

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

Glare is defined as a visual condition in which the observer feels either discomfort and/or exhibits a lower performance in visual tests (e.g. visual acuity or contrast sensitivity). This is produced by a relatively bright source of light–called the glare source–within the visual field. Although the term “glare” is used many times in a general sense, there are actually four different types of glare. The second type of glare is Disabling Glare. Disabling Glare is caused by light too bright for the eye and reduces/blocks vision due to retinal veiling (this is like a veil or haze over the retina). The solution for this type of glare is fixed tint or photochromic lenses. Contact Lens Prescription

Tuesday, May 4th, 2010

Just like medicines, contact lenses are a prescription item in the United States. And even though you may already have an eyeglass prescription, you will also need a separate contact lens prescription. The reason a prescription is needed is that a contact lens is considered a medical device. If not prescribed properly, you may not be able to see well, and, even more importantly, a poorly fitting lens (or one manufactured from a material not well-suited to your eyes) can mean discomfort, inflammation, swelling, abrasion, or, in rare cases, result in permanent eye tissue damage. By law contact lens prescriptions are valid for one year. So, when your prescription expires, you won’t be able to purchase any more contact lenses until you get an updated prescription. This involves a chekup by your Eye Care Professional to be certain the lenses you’re currently wearing aren’t adversely affecting your eyesin any way–as well as providing the best possible vision. Four Types of Glare: 1. Blinding/Reflected Glare

Blinding/Reflected Glare is light that is overwhelming and can result in completely blocked vision. The solution for this type of glare is polarized lenses.
