Kids’ Eyeglasses - What to Look for When Shopping: Pt. 2

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

4. Spring Hinges

Spring hinges applied to kids’ eyeglasses allow the frame’s temple to bend outward when putting glasses on or taking them off. Moreover, flexible metal frames are also available for kids’ eyeglasses but tend to be more expensive.

5. Photochromatic Lenses

Most parents are aware of the need to protect their children’s eyes from the sun’s potentially harmful glare and UV rays. Photochromatic lenses automatically darken when your child goes outside to play, and automatically lighten when they return indoors.

6. Warranties

Cornerstone Eye Associates warranties Doctor’s Rx changes for 60 days from the date the RX is written (lenses will be redone at no charge), 1 year scratch replacement warranty on lenses (provided a scratch resistant coating is purchased), a 2 year scratch warranty on premium lenses, and a 1 year defective frame replacement warranty. An upgraded warranty can be purchased at the time your glasses are dispensed for an additional $35.00 that covers the replacement of lost or stolen glasses at 50% off regular retail pricing for one year.

A Few Contact Lens Do’s and Don’ts

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

DO - Always wash your hands before applying or removing your contact lenses.

DO - Replace your lens case at least every two months or so, even if it still looks clean.

DO - After taking the lenses out of their case, rinse the case with disinfecting solution and let it air dry.

DO - Although most multipurpose solutions are labeled “no rub,” it’s safest to gently rub the lenses prior to disinfection— especially the newer silicone hydrogel contact lenses.

DON’T - Don’t switch brands or use generic alternatives without first consulting your eyecare practitioner — always use the lens care products recommended by your practitioner .

DON’T - Don’t ever reuse the solution in the case. When soaking lenses, dump out old solution from the case and use fresh.

Artificial Tears and Rewetting Drops Usage with Contact Lenses

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

Dry eye symptoms can be a major contributing factor to contact lens dropout. Symptoms may result from either dry eye, a tight-fitting lens or from sensitivity to a particular lens care product. Lubricating/rewetting drops may help to relieve symptoms or they may make them more pronounced depending on the dosage and types of drops chosen. It is best not to confuse artificial tears with contact lens rewetting drops. Artificial tears may contain preservatives that are contra-indicated for soft lens use. However, patients may safely use most preservative-free artificial tears over their soft contact lenses. Rewetting drops that are made specifically for contact lenses are most times best. Kids’ Eyeglasses - What to Look for When Shopping

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

When your child needs a pair of eyeglasses, you should know what to look for before you start shopping. Be sure to allow your child to help in selecting the new eyeglasses, as the more he/she likes the eyeglasses, the more they will enjoy wearing them. The following are a few things to keep in mind when picking out glasses for kids.

1. Polycarbonate Lenses

Polycarbonate is an impact-resistant material that is also used in safety lenses. These special lenses do not shatter on impact like glass or regular plastic lenses, reducing the chance of eye injuries in active kids. Polycarbonate is also thinner and lighter in weight than regular plastic lenses, giving better comfort for the kid wearing them. Polycarbonate lenses also have an added bonus: built-in ultraviolet sun protection.

2. Scratch-Resistant Coatings

Although basic polycarbonate lenses have a resistant coating, when shopping for kids’ eyeglasses, you may want to purchase an upgraded scratch-resistant coating which can be applied to the surface of the lens. This coating makes the lenses even more resistant to scratching.

3. Silicone Nose Pads

Silicone nose pads tend to be softer and more comfortable. They also have a non-slip surface that helps the glasses stay in position on kids’ faces, thus ensuring good eyesight.

Computer Eye Glasses and “Computer Vision Syndrome”

Thursday, September 17th, 2009

When working at the computer the eyes are required to maintain focus and alignment at a fixed distance in many cases, long periods of time. Oftentimes as a result in one or more of the following symptoms can occur: blurred vision, headaches, pulling sensations of the eye muscles, double vision, sleepiness, generalized fatigue, and potentially reduced comprehension and efficiency of function. Moreover, glare from computer screens is also a very common problem. Additionally, it has been found that blink rates are reduced while involved in prolonged near vision tasks such as computer use and can result in complaints of the gritty, sandy, burning symptoms associated with very dry eyes.

Specific lens prescriptions and designs are designed to reduce the demands on your eyes during computer use. These lenses are prescribed to function at the distance that you sit from your computer, which is typically different than your normal reading distance, thus allowing you to work more efficiently and with far greater comfort. Your Guide to Sport Sunglass Lens Tints

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

The best tint for sport sunglasses often depends on the environmental and lighting conditions you experience while participating in a particular sport. So, while this guide offers quick “tried-and-true” tint solutions recommended by many eyecare professionals, don’t be afraid to experiment with lens colors–sometimes the best tints for optimizing performance are a matter of personal preference. A yellow or orange tint tends to heighten contrast in overcast, hazy, low-light conditions outdoors or for indoor sports and filters blue light for sharper focus. Examples of sports in which these tints may help improve performance include: cycling, hunting, shooting, skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling, indoor basketball, handball, racquetball, and/or tennis. An amber, rose or red tint heightens contrast in partly cloudy and sunny conditions, but also causes significant color imbalances. Examples of sports in which these tints may help optimize performance include: cycling, fishing (amber lenses for sandy lake or stream beds), hunting, shooting, skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling, and/or water sports. Dark amber, copper or brown tinted lenses block high amounts of blue light to heighten contrast and visual acuity. This can be useful to improve contrast on grass and against blue skies. Examples of sports in which these tints may help optimize performance include: baseball, cycling, fishing (especially in waters with grassy bottoms), golf, hunting, skiing, and/or water sports. Green tinted lenses heighten contrast (mildly) while preserving color balance. Examples of sports in which these tints may help optimize performance include: baseball and/or golf. A gray tint reduces overall brightness while preserving 100 percent normal color recognition. Examples of sports in which these tints may help optimize performance include all outdoor sports in bright light conditions. Cornerstone Eye Associates Optical Studios have tint samples you can use to help you decide which colors are best for you. Try to evaluate the lenses in lighting conditions that match those you will experience most often during your sport. Moreover, if you participate in several sports or in a variety of lighting conditions, consider purchasing more than one pair of sport sunglasses, with different lens tints in each pair. Some sport sunglass frames have interchangeable lenses for a variety of lighting conditions.
