Popular Myths About Sunglasses #9

Monday, August 31st, 2009

Another common myth regarding sunglasses is that you don’t need sunglasses on a cloudy day. This is also false. UV rays are just as potent on a cloudy day as they are on a clear day, and proper eye and skin protection is always needed. Yet Even More Common Contact Lens Myths

Monday, August 31st, 2009

Many patients who would like to try contact lenses are concerned that they won’t be able to get the lenses into their eyes. Although it can appear difficult and daunting at first, most people soon get used to the idea of putting in and taking contact lenses out of their eyes. And, of course, when you go for your contact lens fitting appointment (or soon after) you will be shown simple methods for inserting and removing your lenses. If millions of people can do it everyday then so can you. Also another misconception regarding contact lenses is that they are painful to wear. This is absolutely false. Most people experience some slight discomfort when they first begin wearing lenses, but this usually lasts only a few minutes. Modern soft contact lenses are easy to wear and so comfortable that, ideally, you will not notice you are wearing lenses at all. Popular Myths About Sunglasses #8

Monday, August 24th, 2009

Yet another popular myth regarding sunglasses is that children don’t need them as much as adults. This is absolutely false. As children often spend even more time in the sun than adults, they need proper UV protection just as much. It is also far more common to find cheap children’s sunglasses that do not provide adequate UV protection. Even More Common Contact Lens Myths

Monday, August 24th, 2009

Yet another common contact lens myth is many people believe that they can’t wear contact lenses–this is most likely false. Contact lenses are now available for wearers from an enormous demographic range. Teenagers and children are able to wear lenses subject to proper hygiene standards being maintained and lenses are now available for presbyopic and astigmatic patients who need toric or bifocal correction. Another common myth is that contact lenses are not available for a particular prescription. This is most probably false. Modern lenses are available in an enormous range of prescriptions for a range of eye conditions. Contact lenses are available to correct myopia (short sightedness), hyperopia (long sightedness), presbyopia (for those over 40) and astigmatism. In addition to the enormous range of prescriptions cosmetic effects are also available for anyone who would like to change their eye color. More Common Contact Lens Myths

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

Another common contact lens myth is that the care regimen for contact lenses is time consuming and complicated. This is false, the exact amount of care required varies depending on the lenses you wear. Extended wear lenses can be left in while you sleep and only need be changed at the intervals recommended by your practitioner. Daily disposable lenses should only be worn once and then discarded and regular wear lenses primarily require only the use of one-bottle care solutions that reduce maintenance to a minimum. An additional myth is that daily disposable lenses can be worn repeatedly. This

is absolutely false. So, despite claims of personal experience from others to the contrary, wearing your daily disposable lenses repeatedly has not been proven safe and as such should never be experimented with–you only have one pair of eyes. Popular Myths About Sunglasses #7

Another myth is that yellow- or amber-tinted “Blue Blocker” lenses offer more protection than regular sunglasses. This too is false. While some experts argue that the so-called “Blue Blocker” lenses block additional light waves that are harmful, research has yet to prove this for certain, and “Blue Blockers” are currently viewed by most experts as a personal preference choice. Common Contact Lens Myths

Monday, August 10th, 2009

A common question that is asked by many contact lens wearers is whether a contact lens can move and get lost behind the eye. This is absolutely false. A thin membrane called the conjunctiva forms a barrier between your eyeball and eyelid making it impossible for the lens to move from the front part of your eye. Another common myth concerning contact lenses is that they can cause eye infections. Some health problems can occur due to contact lens use but these are almost invariably due to poor hygiene or other care related issues such as wearing a lens for longer than the period recommended by your eye care professional. If you follow the professional advice you receive you are at an extremely low risk of suffering any adverse effects or infections.
