Transitions Lenses for Kids

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

Parents understand that they need to take precautions to protect their children’s skin from too much sun exposure but many parents may not be aware of the need to also protect their children’s eyes from the sun’s potentially harmful glare and UV rays. The basic truth is that children are more at risk of experiencing the eye-damaging effects of UV exposure than adults for a number of reasons. For example: children are outdoors more than adults and, on average, they can receive three times the annual UV exposure as an adult; also the lens of an eye of a child below age ten allows more than six times the amount of ultraviolet radiation to penetrate than an adult‘s eye. These are important examples as to why taking care of children’s eyes is so important. Understanding the best ways to do that–as well as protecting them early–can preserve their quality and health of sight for now and the future. To facilitate this, Transitions lenses are one of the most convenient ways to provide automatic, everyday protection for children who wear prescription eyeglasses. Transitions lenses block 100% of UV radiation and reduce glare, which also serves to minimize eye strain and fatigue. Popular Myths About Sunglasses #6

Another myth is that the color of the lens is important when it comes to blocking UV rays. This also is false. Just like lens tint, lens color has nothing to do with protecting your eyes from UV rays. Monovision for Early Presbyopes

Monday, July 27th, 2009

Some contact lens wearers who are early presbyopes (age 40+) are often well-served with monovision as an alternative to being fitted with bifocal contacts. With monovision, you wear a contact lens on one eye to correct your distance vision and a contact lens on your other eye to correct your near vision. The lens for distance vision is usually worn on your dominant eye. The induced imbalance between the eyes is most times minimal and, after a small adjustment period, often well tolerated. When distance or near vision is unacceptable, bifocal options need to be explored. Yet another myth is that polarized, anti-glare lenses are all you need to protect your eyes from UV rays. This is also false. While polarized and anti-glare lenses may offer better image clarity, a comfortable viewing experience and give you better vision when driving or playing sports, they have nothing to do with UV protection. Soft Bifocal Contact Lenses

Monday, July 20th, 2009

Soft bifocal contact lenses have corresponding designs to gas permeable ones and though they are available in various parameters most soft bifocal lenses use a simultaneous vision design. As with rigid simultaneous contacts both distant and near images are focused on the retina simultaneously and perfect vision can be obtained by selective viewing of near or distant images by the patient.

Soft bifocal contact lens designs may be near centered or distant and have both the distance and near zone located in the pupil area. Aspheric soft contact lenses have an anterior or posterior aspheric surface. In the former, the plus power is located towards the center of the lens and is ideal for patients requiring better distance vision in bright light. In the latter the lenses have increasing plus power peripherally and are ideal for people whose vocation or lifestyle demands near vision in bright light.

Bifocal toric lenses–for presbyopic patients who also have an astigmatism–are also available in conventional vial and disposable or planned replacement multi packs and are offered in a wide range of powers. Popular Myths About Sunglasses #4

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

Another myth regarding sunglasses is that photochromic lenses don’t block out UV rays as well as regular sunglasses. This, too, is false. As long as they offer 100% UV protection, photochromic lenses (such as the Transitions-brand) provide the same level of UV protection as regular sunglasses. Rigid Gas Permeable Bifocal Contact Lenses

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

Rigid simultaneous gas permeable contact lenses have the ability to facilitate viewing of objects, which are near in all gazes but is up to the patient whether to view the distance or the nearby image as both are focused on the retina. To obtain perfect vision the patient must train his/her eyes to ignore the hazy near image while focusing on the distant view and vice versa. Also, bifocal contact lenses with an aspheric design offer very good distance as well as intermediate acuity and the near vision is rectified in straight ahead gaze. Rigid annular gas permeable designs have distance, intermediate or near powers arranged in a concentric design. In respect of greater add powers they are better than aspheric gas permeable lenses. A large zone at center provides better distance vision but compromises on the quality of near vision. The converse is also true. Bifocal Contact Lenses

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

Presbyopia is where an individual has problems of both nearsightedness and farsightedness together. Presbyopia can be corrected with lenses that have both distance prescription as well as reading prescription in each lens. Bifocal contact lenses are now available for frequent replacement and also as daily disposables, soft as well as rigid gas permeables and multi packaged disposables. Bifocal contact lenses are usually a little difficult to fit and the adjustment period for them is sometimes long. So, in order to obtain the perfect fit, patience is required and often a number of appointments are needed before the appropriate lenses can be fitted. For further information or to book a contact lens appointment with one of our doctors please call any of our three Rochester, NY Cornerstone Eye Associates locations in Gates (585-328-0153), Brighton (585-244-2200) or Irondequoit (585-266-7880).
