Popular Myths About Sunglasses #2

Monday, June 29th, 2009

Another common myth with regards to sunglasses is that lenses with darker tints are more protective than lenses with a lighter tint. This too is absolutely false. The tint of the lens has nothing to do with the UV protection of the glasses. A clear lens with no tint and 100% UV protection is better for your eyes than dark, heavily tinted sunglasses without UV protection. In fact, dark lenses without adequate UV protection are actually worse for your eyes than not wearing glasses at all, because the dark tint causes your pupils to become dilated, thus exposing your eyes to more harmful UV light. Basic Care of Your Contact Lenses Part 4

Friday, June 26th, 2009

As a continuation to the last blog, please also be aware that when it comes time to for you to purchase some new lens care products, you may be tempted to buy a different brand because the cost is lower, but this is not always a wise idea in that what you may save money-wise may not be worth the risk of using a possibly inferior product and may result in infection. Although these products are safe and are FDA approved, they are not always the same as the brand name. So, overall, it is better to stick with a name brand like the one your eye doctor recommends. Also, once again, if you have any specific questions about your vision, eye care, contact lenses, or caring for contact lenses, it is always best to see your eye care professional. Popular Myths About Sunglasses #1

A common myth regarding sunglasses is that sunglasses with 100% UV protection are expensive. This is absolutely false. You do not have to pay a premium for proper UV protection. While more expensive sunglasses may offer more stylish frames, higher quality lenses, sharper images and less glare, it is very easy to find inexpensive sunglasses that offer 100% UV protection. Basic Care of Your Contact Lenses Part 3

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

Always use a sterile case for your lenses and replace the case every 2 months or so. Rinse your storage case and leave it open to dry after use each day. A dirty case is a major source of infection. Clean the storage case using a clean toothbrush and contact lens solution on a weekly basis. Fill the lens holder with the soaking and disinfecting solution to kill any germs that may cause infections to the eye. Of course, if you have any specific questions about your vision, eye care, contact lenses, or caring for contact lenses, it is always best to see your eye care professional. Furthermore, take note that some lenses also require rubbing the lens to clean them and others merely need to be rinsed. Moreover, make sure that you rinse the contacts after you have cleaned them with a small amount of solution to remove any buildup prior to placing them in your contact lens case. Basic Care of Your Contact Lenses Part 1

Tuesday, June 16th, 2009

If you wear contact lenses, there are some basic steps that should be adhered to for proper contact lens care and to ensure that you keep your eyes in the best possible health. First, and foremost, wash your hands prior to insertion and also removal of your lenses so there is no risk of transferring any germs onto the contact and then into your eye. Don’t use any scented or oily soaps when washing hands and make sure that you have not picked up any lint from a towel that you may have used. Of course, if you have specific questions about your vision, eye care, contact lenses, or caring for contact lenses, it is always best to see your eye care professional. Wearing Makeup with Contact Lenses

Thursday, June 11th, 2009

If you have a choice and, unless a lack of vision prohibits this, it is preferable to insert your contacts before applying makeup to avoid mascara flakes, loose powder, or other products getting on the lenses or between the contact and your eye. Also, as a contact lens wearer, it is important to give some thought to the application and ingredients of a particular makeup. A non-allergenic makeup that is labeled as safe for contact lens wearers is quite often the best. Moreover, eye makeup, in particular, should be of the waterproof type so that in the event your eyes tear (or if wetting drops are used) makeup would not end up in your eyes and on the contacts. For further information or to book a contact lens appointment with one of our doctors please call any of our three Rochester, NY Cornerstone Eye Associates locations in Gates (585-328-0153), Brighton (585-244-2200) or Irondequoit (585-266-7880).

The “Free Trial Pair of Contact Lenses” Coupon

The “Free Trial Pair of Contact Lenses” Coupon

Many lens manufacturers offer, through a variety of different media, a coupon for a pair of “free”trial contacts from an eye care professional. What generally isn’t obvious with these coupons is that in order to redeem them a contact lens appointment involving professional fitting fees is needed. This is due to the fact that a contact lens is considered a medical device, so an eye exam that involves a contact lens fitting is necessary. Moreover, once the fitting is completed, if the patient is new to contact lens wear, an insertion and removal lesson may be warranted. In addition, after the fitting, a follow-up visit is scheduled to ensure that the lenses provide both comfort and the best visual acuity. For further information or to book a contact lens appointment with one of our doctors please call any of our three Rochester, NY Cornerstone Eye Associates locations in Gates (585-328-0153), Brighton (585-244-2200) or Irondequoit (585-266-7880).
