Post operative discomfort after PRK

Thursday, March 26th, 2009

Here at Cornerstone Eye Associates in Rochester NY we hear lots of questions from patients regarding their post operative care after LASIK or PRK. One of the biggest concerns is discomfort after their LASIK or PRK procedure.  We let them know that yes you may feel some scratchy, burning, foreign body sensation but these symptoms are temporary. For LASIK patients the symptoms are usually resolved within a 24 hour period. For patients that have PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy) the symptoms can last a few days longer.  With some common sense tips and the instillation of eye drops that we provide, most patients have little discomfort after their PRK procedure. The use of cold BSS (balanced salt solution)  and a bandage contact lens directly after the procedure helps with the discomfort.  In combination these therapies work well in keeping Cornerstone Eye Associates PRK patients comfortable and happy.

Mitomycin C use in PRK

Thursday, March 12th, 2009

Here at Cornerstone Eye Associates in Rochester we believe that a well informed refractive surgery patient is happier postoperatively. During the free consultation we determine if patients are a good candidate for refractive surgery. We also counsel them as to what type of procedure would be appropriate for them. While the majority of our patients are good candidates for LASIK some patients are better served with PRK. This is especially true if they have moderate to high myopia with thinner corneas.  If this is the case we  use a medicine called Mitomycin C to help prevent haze from forming during the post-operative period. A recent study was conducted and concluded that; Mitomycin C 0.02% used prophylactically during PRK or PTK re treatment was effective in preventing significant recurrent haze from developing. In eyes with high myopia or prevoius RK or scarring, MMC was effective in preventing significant haze formation.[J Refract Surg. 2009;25:S93-S97]
